More on the recent announcement...

This is the first chance today I've had to sit down and mull this whole thing over.  As it happens, this is the day I teach a scripture course in the high school, and then I had appointments right after that.  Now that the important mid-day activity (lunch!) is over, I can think about this extraordinary development for the Anglican Use.

The first thing that strikes me is that this will be established by an Apostolic Constitution.  That's big.  This is the highest level for a papal decree.  Higher, even, than a papal encyclical.  It's the most solemn form of a papal decree.  Quite incredible!

That's my thought for now.  I need to read about all this some more, and I'll post more in a while.

Fr. Phillips,

I read a statement by TAC's head Bishop Hepworth and he stated that they would not accept the BDW!

It appears that there will be some controversy between what has been established within the AU parishes way of worship and the incoming group of TAC members.

How will this affect our worship and do you feel that demands made to Rome will be taken into consideration?

Father Phillips, Thank you for the work you do. I believe our parish provides a great example of the Anglican Use Liturgy. The reverence of the mass at Our Lady of the Atonement really makes you appreciate the celebration of the holy eucharist. This is "Change you can believe in".

I humbly say to you Father, my friend... Thanks to you for your 'yes', so many years ago. Thank you for helping to form my Catholic spirit by the use of AU liturgy. Thanks for hearing my confessions and giving me the Body and Blood of our Lord. Thank you for witnessing my marriage to dear Daniel and for assisting me in the burial of my mother. God has truly blessed me through this incredible Parish. Thank You- PH

Dear Fr. Phillips,

How is this different from the pastoral provision of JPII for the Anglican use? I thought the pastoral provision already allowed for the ease of Anglicans returning home.

Thank you for further definition,

Pretty mindblowing news, indeed. Deo gratias!

I've never been an Anglican per se, but my time at OLotA has certainly helped me grow "Anglo-Catholic" sensibilities. (By that, I simply mean a love for superb sacred music, Gothic vestments, the Elizabethan "epic English" of the BDW, and liturgy that's so high-church there's barely enough oxygen to breathe. And to think I actually thought fiddleback chasubles were cool a couple years ago.)

But seriously, Father, keep up the good work for Our Lord and His holy church. I hope this new development does great things for the parish.

Anonymous 1: Based on my extensive research on Bishop Hepworth and the BDW (that is to say, about 5 minutes of Googling), I couldn't find anything to suggest he rejects the BDW, but it looks like he's hoping the TAC will be able to retain the books they currently use. Sounds like the Anglican Missal is among them; but I'm sure Father Phillips knows much more about this than I do, so I'm gonna shut up now.
