Meeting on December 12th...

With the very generous decision made by the Holy Father, which has been published in his Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum coetibus, we really are in the midst of one of those truly historic moments in the history of the Church. With this Constitution, Pope Benedict XVI has given resounding confirmation of what our parish has been doing for these past twenty-six years. Our Lady of the Atonement Parish will be hosting a meeting on Saturday, December 12th, which will provide an opportunity to learn more about the Holy Father's initiative, and what it means for us. We'll have a few speakers who will give brief presentations; there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions, which will be answered with the information we have. During my recent visit to Rome, I spent some time speaking with some of the staff of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and in particular, with a priest who works closely with William Cardinal Levada, Prefect of the CDF. Much of what he said to me will be helpful to us.

We'll begin with Mass at 10:00 a.m., and we should be able to begin our meeting in the St. Anthony Hall at about 11:00 a.m. We'll break for lunch, and continue after that for as long as people would like.  Email me at FrPhillips@atonementonline.com if you plan to attend, and let me know if you want lunch ($6.00, pay on the day).

If there are a number of non-parishioners in attendance, will you be having one of the school choirs give a brief showcase of music that demonstrates the Anglican heritage? (I think Mr. Murray did have a rehearsal for 9 Lessons & Carols planned for that morning).

How will persons unable to attend the meeting and not connected with OLA be able to obtain the information given at the meeting and have their questions answered?

We will be recording the meeting, and that will be available to people, probably by podcast posted on the website. We don't have the technology necessary to have people ask questions from other locations, but I would imagine plenty of people have the same questions, and they'll be asked and answered in the course of the meeting.

Fr. Phillips,

One question I have, is that some Anglicans are saying that Roman Rite Catholics won't be allowed to be members of an Anglican Use/Ordinariate parish. Is this how you read the Apostolic Constitution?

Hopefully not as this would limit the growth of a parish and deny Catholics to belong to a parish of their choosing.

Anonymous, I addressed that issue in this previous posting: http://atonementparish.blogspot.com/2009/11/response-to-questions.html

How about letting people e-mail their questions ahead of time, and you can select the ones that you feel are representative of typical questions that should be answered in a public forum?

Just give us an e-mail address.

By all means, send questions in, and I'll get them to the speakers beforehand, so many of these things can be addressed in the talks themselves.
