I have to admit that when I hear this proclamation, it bothers me. Don't we know for sure that the earth was not created 5000 years ago?
Why then do we continue to sing this incorrect fact?
Perhaps I am not looking at this in the right way?

The point of this is to assert that God in human flesh entered into time. Yes, we know the earth wasn't created 5,000 years ago. But is that much different than asserting it was created millions of years ago, or billions of years ago? Who knows? All we know is that it was created, and now God has entered into His creation in a unique way.
