I was with a (non-christian) friend that day, and of course the topic of the day came up. My friend expressed her fear that Ratzinger, that arch-conservative, could be elected - I defended him, at the same time stating my doubts that he could stand a chance. Coming home later in the evening, I I switched on my computer and caught the live stream just while the Cardinal pronounced the words "sanctae ecclesiae cardinalem Ratzinger". What a great day! My friend, alas, still doesn't like our Holy Father a lot...
I hadn't even been a Catholic for a year at that point, but I remember watching the EWTN live feed on my computer during my off period at the school where I taught. So exciting. It must have been so much more so for the people who knew who Ratzinger was at the time!
Fr. Phillips, My family and I were in San Antonio this weekend, and attended mass at Our Lady of Antonement. We are Byzantine Rite Catholics and currently live 'way down' in the RGV where we have been attending a Latin Rite parish (for lack of a church closer to us than Houston, which is 6 hrs away!). We were completely enamored of the Anglican Use Liturgy- as it is very similar to our Byzantine Rite Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. We hope to make the drive a few more times when my work schedule and finances permit! One of our parish priests in the past was Fr. Doug Lorig in Arizona- You probably know him...as a former Episcopal Priest and Catholic Convert himself- he has Bi-Ritual Faculties.
Delighted you were here, Catholic mom. I hope you'll return whenever possible. We have other Byzantine Catholics who attend regularly because it's as close as they can find to their own!
And yes, I know Fr. Lorig -- we were "in the process" together.
I was at home with my parents, doing....I don't know; my parents were both outside working on their garden when I flipped on TV, still expecting that it would take more time to elect a pope, only to see the newly elected Pope Benedict XVI on CNN---came outside to get my parents to watch the remaining coverage.
Unfortunately, the only thing I remember other than this was a reporter quoting some German Protestant minister that "This is a catastrophe" on the evening news.
I wonder what's wrong with those Germans, always blaming Pope Benedict XVI for everything.
Anyway, we have Byzantine Catholics in our parish? I enjoy our worship here at Atonement, thought I would love to go to a Catholic Byzantine Divine Liturgy (I've been to a Greek Orthodox one a long time ago as well as the local Maronite Catholic Church)---someday when I'm in Houston, I suppose.

This was so exciting at the time and even today still a little unreal for those of us who knew of him because we had met him as a regular Joseph.
And what a fantastic father he has been to us all in these five years.
