About that L.A. appointment...
Reactions to the appointment of Archbishop Gomez as Coadjutor Archbishop of Los Angeles are many and varied.
On a more serious note, however, I rather hate to see Hitler used to point out even flagrant weaknesses in our bishops. What we really need to do is pray for them.
It's not either/or, anonymous. I pray for strength and courage for our good bishops and for the on-going conversion of our less-good bishops. But it doesn't mean we can't have a little chuckle along the way.
That's the best reaction yet. I knew Hitler would be displeased.
(It's a fairly popular Internet geek joke to dub that clip from the movie "Downfall" with a diatribe against just about anything. I think the first was about Hitler getting his Xbox Live account canceled by Microsoft.)
Yes, I've seen it used for several issues, and yet it always seems to be funny in an original way. This is the first time it's been so "local" for us, however.
I have read posts that say Bishop Gomez wasn't able to correct some of the abuses and that he didn't allow TLM Masses in San Antonio.
They also laugh that LA will be more or less impossible to change what has been going on here for the past 25 years under Mahony.
We have so many liberal priests in So. California. Also from what I have been told Mahony dictated what other Bishops in other diocese were allowed to do.
He wouldn't let the Mercy Fathers come to our dioceses. Our priest is very traditional and has a mind of his own and we had Fr. Bill Casey for our Lenten Mission speak for 5 days. Our Pastor obeys the true teachings of the Church and I guess ignored the rule of no Mercy Fathers.
Do you think that Bishop Gomez will be strong enough to make a difference in LA? Many want him to tear down the Cathedral. Hopefully we will no longer have liturgical dancing in California.
When we first moved to New Braunfels from Dallas 17 years ago, we attended an outdoor Mass on the square in New Braunfels. Archbishop Flores came from San Antonio and there were wildly colorful Aztec dancers wearing tall feathered headdresses that made them look about seven feet tall taking part in the Mass. I don't know if the Archbishop brought the liturgical dancers or someone else arranged for them . It was truly bizarre. We questioned what was going on here. So glad that period has passed and we are back to devout piety in worship.
I don't know what liturgical abuses are being referred to, but as far as I can tell, the archbishop quietly corrected them. Now, there are things one sees which I think are simply in bad taste, but those aren't abuses in the technical sense.
As far as the Extraordinary Form of the Mass is concerned, Archbishop Gomez has not stood in the way of it at all. In fact, it's offered regularly at a parish in San Antonio. Although he seems to prefer the Ordinary Form - and has celebrated the OF in Latin here at our parish on more than one occasion, as well as using the Anglican Use liturgy - he has never discouraged the celebration of the EF.
He is completely obedient to what the Holy Father desires, and expects his priests to do the same. He has subtle but strong ways of achieving that, and I imagine he will continue in that way when he gets to LA.

"...our excellent liturgical dance program." LOL!

LOVED IT! Oh to see the reactions of Californians like Pelosi and Schwarzenegger.
